Modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for the development of melasma

Nigora Khojaevaa*

ABSTRACT:     Recently, in the structure of skin pathology, more and more attention is paid to melanin dyschromia. The tendency to pigmentation disorders is expressed in individuals with Fitzpatrick type III-Y skin and varies greatly: from the lowest rate of 10.2% in Singapore to 61% in Brazil. According to epidemiological studies conducted in different countries, melasma occurs with a frequency of 25-30% among women, mainly of childbearing age and 10% among men, in 11.3-46% of women who use oral contraceptives (COCs), in 14.5 -56% of pregnant women, and despite large differences in the prevalence of melasma between different ethnic groups and skin phototypes, its predominant development is observed in women of reproductive age living under conditions of chronic exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The development of melasma in women has a significant impact on their quality of life, but also creates preconditions for neoplasia, including melanoma.
